QLD Cost of Living Rebate (Ended)

The Queensland Government offered a $1,000 Cost of Living electricity rebate during 2024-25 as a one-off measure. This rebate has ended and is not continuing in 2025-26. It was a temporary budget measure and is no longer available.

If you received this rebate in 2024-25, no action is needed — it was applied automatically and has now concluded.

Federal Energy Bill Relief Fund

In the 2025-26 period, the Australian Government is providing a $150.00 Energy Bill Relief payment to all Australian households, applied as credits to electricity bills. This is not means-tested — every household receives it automatically through their electricity retailer. You do not need to apply separately.

Note: This is reduced from the $300 provided in 2024-25.

Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession

If you or someone in your household has a medical condition that requires the use of cooling or heating to regulate body temperature, you may be eligible for the Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession.

Key details:

Amount: $522.09 per year ($130.52 per quarter) *(Source: QLD PDD, 2025-26 concession rates)*

Eligibility: A medical practitioner must certify that the person has a medical condition requiring cooling or heating at home

Concession card not required: This concession is available regardless of whether you hold a concession card, provided you meet the medical criteria

Stackable: This may be received in addition to the standard Electricity Rebate (Concession) if you are eligible for both

Conditions That May Qualify

The Queensland Government does not publish an exhaustive list, but conditions that typically qualify include:

• Multiple sclerosis

• Lymphoedema

• Fibromyalgia

• Post-polio syndrome / poliomyelitis

• Parkinson's disease

• Other conditions where a medical practitioner certifies that temperature regulation at home is medically necessary

You will need to provide a completed medical certificate from your doctor to your electricity retailer.

Electricity Life Support Concession

If someone in your household uses life support equipment at home that requires electricity, you may be eligible for the Electricity Life Support Concession.

Equipment examples: Oxygen concentrators, ventilators, dialysis machines, and other equipment as certified by a medical practitioner

How to Apply

For the Electricity Rebate (Concession)

1. Contact your electricity retailer (e.g., Origin Energy, AGL, Energy Australia, Ergon Energy, or your current provider)

2. Provide your concession card details — card type, card number, and the name on the card

3. Confirm your residential address — the account must be at your principal place of residence in Queensland

4. The rebate will be applied to your next billing cycle and continue automatically while you remain eligible

Most retailers allow you to register your concession card online through your account portal, by phone, or in writing.

For Medical Cooling/Heating or Life Support Concessions

1. Obtain a medical certificate from your registered medical practitioner, confirming the condition and the need for cooling, heating, or life support equipment at home

2. Submit the certificate to your electricity retailer — contact them for the specific form they require

3. The concession will be applied once processed

Important Reminders

• If your concession card is renewed or reissued with a new number, update your retailer immediately to avoid interruption

• If you change electricity retailers, you will need to re-register your concession card or medical certificate with the new provider

• If you move address, contact your retailer to transfer the concession to your new account

Tips to Maximise Your Savings

1. Check You Are Receiving All Eligible Rebates

Some households qualify for more than one concession — for example, the standard Electricity Rebate plus the Medical Cooling/Heating Concession. Review your electricity bill to confirm which rebates are being applied. If you think one is missing, contact your retailer.

2. Combine Rebates with a Competitive Energy Plan

Concessions reduce your bill, but they work on top of whatever plan you're on. If your underlying energy plan is expensive, you may still be paying more than necessary. Comparing energy plans could reveal a lower-cost option that, combined with your rebate, delivers greater overall savings.

You can to see estimated annual costs across available retailers in your area — with zero commission.

3. Update Your Card Details When They Change

Concession cards expire and get reissued. If you forget to update your retailer with new card details, your rebate may be suspended. Set a reminder when your card is renewed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to apply every year for the QLD Electricity Rebate?

No. Once you have registered your concession card with your electricity retailer, the rebate should continue automatically for as long as you remain eligible and your card is valid. However, if your card is reissued with a new number or you switch retailers, you will need to re-register.

Can I get more than one electricity concession at the same time?

You may be eligible for multiple concessions if you qualify. For example, a household could potentially receive both the standard Electricity Rebate (Concession) and the Medical Cooling/Heating Concession. Contact your retailer to confirm what applies to your situation.

What if I'm renting — can I still get the rebate?

Yes, provided the electricity account is in your name and the address is your principal place of residence in Queensland. If your electricity is included in your rent (i.e., you don't have a separate account), you may not be able to receive the rebate directly. Contact the for guidance on your specific arrangement.

Is the QLD Electricity Rebate means-tested?

The Electricity Rebate (Concession) is not directly means-tested — but it requires you to hold a valid concession card (Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, QLD Seniors Card, or DVA Gold Card), and some of those cards have their own eligibility criteria, which may include income tests. The Medical Cooling/Heating and Life Support concessions are based on medical need, not income.

How is the rebate applied to my bill?

The rebate is applied as a credit on your electricity bill each quarter. You will see a line item showing the concession amount (estimated at $96.59 per quarter for the Electricity Rebate). If your bill is less than the rebate amount, the remaining credit carries forward.
